Thank you for your interest in collaborating with PBS NC.

PBS NC is proud to showcase many hours of independently produced content across our multiple platforms, including PBS NC, PBS NC Explorer Channel, PBS NC Kids Channel, the North Carolina Channel, pbsnc.org, and other digital media outlets.

We are excited to work with the creative and passionate independent producers and filmmakers from across North Carolina and our region. Below you will find our online application, including a place to post your work sample and digitally agree to our submission release form. The information you provide will help us review your program or proposal.

PBS NC receives many more submissions and proposals than we could possibly use across our platforms. However best efforts will be made to respond to all inquiries within six weeks of the submission date.

Please note that PBS NC does not currently have dedicated funding for the production of independent projects, or the staff capacity to help you raise funds. Resources PBS NC can offer include:

  • in-kind production and post-production services
  • distribution
  • consulting
  • letters of support
  • broadcast or streaming on our platforms

We are most interested in content that is directly related to PBS NC's mission of educating, enlightening, and inspiring our members and viewers across the state. Topics and areas of interest include:

  • Arts & Entertainment
  • Lifestyle & Culture  (travel, food, how to, etc.)
  • Documentary
  • History
  • Public Affairs & Civic Engagement
  • Science & Health

Topics or types of programming we are not interested in include:

  • advocacy programs
  • commercial or promotional programs
  • religious programs

Independent productions may be presented as series, stand-alone programs, or folded into some of our current productions. PBS NC is also looking for digital content for pbsnc.org and our other digital platforms.

Please review the PBS Funding Standards and Practices guidelines, and the PBS Editorial Standards and Practices guidelines before submitting your materials. We review all submissions with this criteria in mind.

We look forward to reviewing your materials.

REEL SOUTH reveals the South's proud yet complicated heritage, as told by a diversity of voices and perspectives, through the commission, curation, and distribution of feature-length and short documentaries. Reel South is a PBS documentary series and a platform for and a service to non-fiction filmmakers in the American South.
The producers of REEL SOUTH are eager to see your work. To make things simple, we have a rolling submissions process. Here are some basic details about submitting your film for consideration:
Criteria
REEL SOUTH seeks films that focus on the people, issues, and culture of our region. The series showcases films that cover a broad range of topics and filmmaking styles: from public affairs or social issues to more personal or experimental works. In terms of style and format, narrated and non-narrated films are considered along with first person or point of view projects, observational films, and news documentaries. We accept feature-length films (40 to 90 minutes) and short films (5 to 40 minutes).
Filmmakers based in the South are given priority but all stories set in the South will be eligible.
Eligibility
Non-fiction: Only documentary films will be considered.
Independents only: Filmmakers must have artistic, editorial, and budgetary control of their projects, and own or co-own the copyright.
Completed or nearly completed works: Submitted works must be completed films, fine cuts, advanced rough cuts, or festival versions. Please be advised we cannot guarantee feedback on your project.
Rights and Releases: Submitted works must have signed appearance releases for all persons appearing in the film (for all rights). Additionally, all third party material –– including music, photos, and acquired footage –– must be cleared. Proof of releases and licenses may be required. Any legal justifications in lieu of releases should be provided as well.

Editorial and Funding Guidelines
All projects must comply with PBS' editorial and funding guidelines found here.

Compensation
Selected films will receive a license fee, series packaging, captioning, mastering, inclusion on the series website, promotion, and errors and omissions insurance coverage.
Timeline
We will review films on a rolling basis and once accepted, films will usually be released within a 6-8 month window, except for digital-only distribution.
